Here are some of my thoughts after the Super Bowl this last week.
Our little family doesn’t pay for a bunch of subscriptions. On a good day, we’ve got Hulu and a Spotify account I’ve somehow managed to keep since college. So I didn’t watch the Super Bowl—and honestly, I didn’t really want to. And that surprised me.
It actually felt… relieving.
I think part of it is how charged everything feels these days. It’s like no matter what you watch—or don’t watch—you’re expected to have a stance, an opinion, a side. I didn’t watch the game, the halftime show, the Puppy Bowl, or any of it. And I noticed how often people asked, “Which one did you watch?” knowing full well that your answer might invite judgment either way.
For us, choosing not to watch was about protecting our peace—and our family. You never really know what’s going to be said or shown, and this time, we opted out. And I’m grateful we did.
Instead, I spent the evening with my kids. I cooked some sweet potatoes (which they are currently obsessed with), and we just enjoyed being together. Nothing fancy. Just time. And honestly, that’s what Sundays feel like they’re meant for.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I’m not claiming perfection. I absolutely get wrapped up in things too (Tarleton State football being one of them). But it felt good to practice stepping back from something “big” and worldly, even just this once.
Maybe this isn’t about the Super Bowl at all. Maybe it’s about noticing the things that take up a lot of space in our lives and choosing—sometimes—to step away and focus on our families instead. You might find a different kind of joy there. Or maybe just a little more peace.
Just something I’ve been thinking about.
Until next time.
